Kai, are you a biter or a sucker?
Purely in regard to chocolate, I confess I’m a biter. Although I absolutely like the delicate melt afterwards – the fine cocoa flavor is sweet and tender. I basically like the whole aura that surrounds the subject of chocolate from stories of the Aztecs to the aphrodisiac effect. The Mayans believed the cocoa plant was of divine origin. Cocoa was regarded as an intoxicating food and, according to the Aztecs, was not suitable for women and children.
What is important when photographing chocolate?
Either the viewer’s mouth is watering or it’s not a good photo. People should lust for choclate and immediately forget about the calories. To get to that point, we often work with “dummies”. They are washable stand-ins that are not sensitive to fingerprints and can be produced in big sizes. This helps with depth of field and for detail work.
